Chris,
  It is not exactly debugging, but the first step I take is to
identify the chipset of the wifi device.  Start with lsusb or lspci.
It will probably be lspci, since most laptops put it on the pci bus.
Google for the ID you find and the specs on the card will usually tell
you the id of the wifi chipset.  Then, go to:
  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_open-source_wireless_drivers
  and see what the status of the driver is  I want drivers where the
4th and 5th columns are green.  Realtek does make some wifi chips.that
have good drivers.  From there, you can research the driver you need
or maybe decide to replace the wifi device.  Since, mini-pci cards for
cards with good driver support are under $10, I do that if possible.
But, in any case, you know more about the device at that point.
