My OS is Mageia 5 (64bit) running KDE4 ... the file manager tool is Dolphin. Attaching the USB drive to the computer causes a USB icon to appear in the tray, and you are presented with action options, one of which is to open the drive with the file manager ... then you can navigate the device to see what is there, etc. Of course, once the device is opened this way, it is mounted, and you could open a terminal and navigate the device from there. I believe that most distros have similar features. Hope that helps. ... or have you already tried this?
