Hi Paul,
You're in the situation I found myself in 1998. I learned Linux by
installing about 40 times and observing the differences different
install choices made on config files.
If you have an old PC you don't need anymore, use that. Older
machines are more Linux compatible because Free Software authors have
had more time to make good drivers.
If you don't have an old machine, perhaps buy one for $200. I'd make it
a mid-tower so you can actually operate on it, change the video card,
change the network card, etc.
Once you learn Linux you'll be better able to gauge your wants and
needs.
