Why doesn't my /var/log/secure* file show any current logins (entries)?

The last entry I see is:
Jul 22 23:04:03 myputer in.telnetd[3356]: connect from 151.4.126.131

It's in the ...secure.2 file.  Which is exactly like the secure.1 file.  And
the secure (the first one) file is completely empty.

I have telneted and ftp'd in to this server several times since the date shown
above.

Anyone have any ideas?
