Older monitors had this problem...but the newer multi-sync monitors are fairly
immune to anything youc an put in your XF86Config file.

On the older monitors, if you set your horiz sync rate too high, you could
overdrive the flyback transformer, which would then saturate and overheat, leading
to a dead transformer.
