Thanks m m,

I have solved the problem.  As Greg E had suggested here on this list, I edited
the XF86Config file with the horz/vert sync freqs and all is well.

I was kind of chicken about doing this because I had read some strong warnings
about frying monitors if you didn't enter the correct values.
