About 1200 members, I think. Down from 2400 a few years ago. The club
appears to have leadership problems.
Kathleen's experience is typical. NTPCUG's leadership does not place a
high priority on community service; rather, they (used to) claim to be
primarily SIG-oriented.
To get space as an exhibitor with the vendors would cost $75 ($95, less
than a week from the show date). That provides for one table with
electricity; phone lines are not available. There is a $3 public entry fee
to the vendor area. DFW Xchange may be in an assessment spiral, with
rising rates and falling participation.
NTPCUG sometimes hosts vendor presentations at their main meeting. The
presenters are usually asked to pay for the A/V equipment. I don't know if
NTPCUG would be interested in promoting/advertising a Linux
demo/presentation, given their ties to Microsoft.
If, as someone in another message noted, we were to reciprocate and host
NTPCUG:
1. Would we charge them the same price they would have DFW Xchange charge us?
2. What would we get out of their presentation? A chance to hear about
their SIGs, and the benefits from paying $30 annual membership dues. (The
benefits appear to be the monthly newsletter and free access to the vendor
area.) Their SIG meetings and vendor presentations are probably still open
to the public.
I am contacting NTPCUG to see if there is any interest in something
mutually advantageous. This is in spite of my above negative comments.
