Kathleen,

If you meant Ethertalk and AppleShare volumes when you asked about
Mac connectivity, look into Netatalk. It is a package similar to Samba
except that it is exporting AppleShares rather than SMB. I run a simple
netatalk set up at home all of the time. All I did was install the
netatalk package. It defaults to exporting each users home directory
with username/password authentication.

I have not attempted to "share" the same directory structure using
netatalk and Samba at the same time (I don't have any x86 equipment
in my home network).

Oh yeah, on the MacOS side, you obviously need an appropriately set
up ethernet card with a valid on your network IP address and netmask.

On the other hand, if what you are asking about is using Linux on the
Mac rather than MacOS, investigate the following:

   http://www.mac.linux-m68k.org -- 680x0 series Linux for Macintosh

http://www.mklinux.org -- The OSF Microkernel version of
                                        Linux for PowerMacs

http://www.linuxppc.org -- Monolithic (normal) Linux for
                                        PowerPC processor based PCI systems

Good Luck,

Rick
