Your problem is similar to one I experienced a bit ago.

Older versions of Ftape gave me problems when I upgraded from the 2.0 kernel
series.  I had a heck of a time getting it working, but under 2.[12] kernels
you need to compile zftape support into your kernel.  I believe that the
newest ftape stuff will only compile as a module under 2.[12].  Also, I'm
using /dev/qft0, which is unusable without the zftape modules loaded.

My caveat is that I've only done this on a 2.1 kernel but I suspect that the
same holds for 2.2 kernels.  Since you've upgraded from RH 5.2 (which used a
2.0 kernel) to RH 6.0 (which uses a 2.2 kernel) I think this may be where your
problem lies.
