Personally,
Toss it and buy a real NIC. I recommend the Netgear with the Tulip chipset.
Works beautifully with my cable modem.
As far as the static IP goes, I just converted a friends windoze box from
DHCP to Static last night and he is working fine. And I've had my
Linux/Win98 Dualboot setup with a static IP from day 1, even though the guy
said it should be dynamic.
