Are you running smb as a stand-alone daemon or through inetd?  Sounds
like as a stand-alone daemon.  I wonder if that would still be a
problems if running it through inetd instead.  That way it checks config
files every time, less issues of caching.   I guess it would depend how
much traffic you get to see if that would a bad thing or not.
