Mark,

If you don't mind an internal modem, you might try the AOpen FM56-ITU/2.

It's not a win-modem. It's a 56K V.90 and cruises. It works great in Linux
and only costs $50.

Last friday's weather apparently exposed my modem to excessive EMF.  I
