3com (USR) modems work well, if you don't mind the expense.

I've used USR Sportster for many years with very little trouble.  I
mainly use externals since there tends to be fewer compatability issues
with externals, but the internal Sportsters work well too.  Most
internal Sporsters have jumpers, you can set the IRQ and IO ports
manually, or you can remove all of the jumpers for PNP operation (I
don't recommend it).  Some don't mind you.

If you want a real heavy duty modem, get a Courier, just make sure you
can afford it. :)
