A neighbour of mine (Cedar Hill) had TCI install cable just last week.
He *definitely* had not one but TWO static IP addresses. They charged
him some nominal amount for the second IP. He can't even *spell* IP
let alone know why he might prefer it to a dynamic one.

I helped him get his home net going - so I know this for sure.

The second address turned out to be in illegal use by someone else
who had seen the block of addresses TCI was using and had stolen one!

Unfortunately, my house is too far from the street to get cable,
so DSL will be the only option.

One question though.

If your connection is a 24/7 deal, how is it possible for your
dynamic address to ever change? I guess if you ever reboot your
PC?

As to what to tell the rep when requesting a static IP, just tell
them that you need to pull files from your home machine from work.
I don't think doing that violates your agreement...and it would be
a pain to do with a dynamic IP.
