You're on the right track -- having put on several large events (and I am NOT volunteering which is why I've been biting my tongue for so long), is that no one person had ownership.  What should have happened on the Linux Demo Days, is that a call for a chairman should have been made, and one person should have been selected as chair.

What happened on the Linux Demo is that everyone sat back and waited for someone else to make a decision.  Never works.
