Figured it out, thanks to everyone's help. It was a little bit of everything:
the user nobody has a password (!), I misspelled the directory name in one of the
services sections, and I had to set 'dns proxy = no' (resolv.conf had an
unreachable DNS address).
Pretty cool stuff. I have samba running on a 486/40 with about 16M of RAM, and
it's still quite snappy. These are the little things that keep me interested in
Linux...
