I have setup ipchains on several networks with mail and web services
etc. You will also need to look at port forwarding. As for the
distribution. It doesn't really matter as they all use the same
mechanism to accomplish this. I would however  recommend that which ever
distribution you choose. That you review all the software you are adding
as you do the install and remove anything you do not need, this would be
anything you do not need for the purpose of ipchains and port
forwarding. 

Another thing you could try is some of these micro distributions. And
then just add the ipchains package to it and that would make an good
firewall. I think I remember hearing about someone who created a micro
distribution for this sole purpose but I don't remember the name.
