Uh, what card is it?

What server are you using?  And what depth (in bit planes) are you
using?

Are you sure you're not running out of color cells in your color map? 
(Try using "xcmap" to see what you're using.  If you are NOT using them
all, some of the cells at the bottom should be black upon start up.)

What happens if you force an xterm's colors with "xterm -fg white -bg
black"?  (Put that in your .xinitrc)  (*All* X servers should always
have those 2 colors.)  If this fails too, then I would suspect hardware
or a severe configuration problem.  If this works, then it's definitely
just configuration, not hardware, IMHO.

My ATI XPression+ board (PCI, w/ 4M, a Mach 64 chip) does quite well,
and is in that price range last I looked.  And I am assuming they're
still made since it's been a few months since I looked. :-)
