Actually I tried both RH and Slack bootdisks. I tried several versions of
boot.img (RH), from several different distribution versions. I also tried
bare.i from the latest slackware (7?) as well an older version. I tried two
different versions of rawwrite as well.

Exactly. It appeared that it wrote possible 15% before rawwrite exited.
When I tried it from a dos prompt instead of double clicking the rawwrite
icon, I get an error (something like trying to write across memory blocks).
