[NTLUG:Discuss] How do I "set -o vi" in gnome-terminal (Redhat 6.0)?

At first I was annoyed that new terminal windows in Gnome did not read
my .bash_profile, but then saw that I could change the Properties of the
"Terminal emulation program" icon to run "gnome-terminal --login". Now I
do not have to run ". .bash_profile" for each new window.
However, I am used to editing command lines in bash with vi-type
commands. When I execute "set -o vi" I do not get any error message, but
I also cannot use vi commands to edit commands.
"set -o emacs" works, and allows me to edit commands using emacs
commands, but I am not very familiar with it.
Any suggestions (other than the obvious one -- learn emacs)?
