[NTLUG:Discuss] Sound configuration problem

Hi all,

I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction. In short,
I have my sound card working partially, and I would like to get it working
fully. I can get eight bit sound only, not 16 (which it should do), and I
can't get the mixer (again, which I think it should). Other details:

* I've made a thorough search using several linux related web-sites,
deja.com, northernlight.com, and (on a whim) yahoo, and read (several
times) the relevant howto's and documentation.

* Aztech Sound Galaxy Nova 16

* SuSE 6.1

* kernel 2.2.13

* sound compiled in as modules

* the relevant lines in /etc/conf.modules read as follows:

	alias char-major-14 sb
	post-install sb /sbin/modprobe "-k" "adlib_card"
	options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
	options adlib_card io=0x388

* cat /dev/sndstat yields:

	OSS/Free:3.8s2++-971130
	Load type: Driver loaded as a module
	Kernel: Linux host1 2.2.13 #7 Fri Nov 26 22:57:42 CST 1999 i586
	Config options: 0

	Installed drivers:

	Card config:

	Audio devices:
	0: Sound Blaster (8 BIT/MONO ONLY) (2.01)

	Synth devices:
	0: Yamaha OPL3

	Midi devices:
	0: Sound Blaster

	Timers:
	0: System clock

	Mixers:

* when I try to use a program that uses a mixer (obviously), I get "Can't
open /dev/mixer: Operation not supported by device"

Any ideas on what I'm forgetting/missing/not doing/shouldn't be doing?

Many thanks in advance,

Dan
