Or to take this idea 1 step farther...  Have you considered 'borrowing'
an ATAPI CD from someone else's machine (say yours :-) and install it in
his machine long enough to do an install?  You could take yours back out
after that.  After you have a working system on his machine, you may be
able to get his CD working by finding a different driver.  And if you
need to recompile the kernel, you'll be able to at that point.
