Well, I started to install using YAST2 - but when it wouldn't let
me choose how to partition the disk or even use the existing
partitions, I dumped it and went back to the original YAST - which
is happy to leave your partitions alone.

Technically, if you RTFM, it says that you should use CD #1
(which is YAST2) for a NEW installation and CD #2 (which is
YAST1) for 'upgrades'.  I suppose they imagine that if this
is a new install, they are at liberty to repartition as they
see fit.
