If your network isn't working (not just internet) then execute the ifconfig
command to see if your network adapter is properly configured.  Execute the
route command to see if your network routes are properly configured.
Chances are that there are problems in one or both areas.  Look in the
appropriate /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX file to see if the
environment variables used by the RedHat scripts are setup correctly.  Make
any necessary changes to the file, then execute ifdown ethX and ifup ethX.
Once the network is up, then you can move on the the modem and ppp
configuration...
