I certainly can't speak for Kendall, but in my limited experience with
Linux and laptops (Dells, mostly), RedHat always seems to be able to
recognize PCMCIA cards and the somtimes-oddball video hardware that
laptop mfrs. seem to be so fond of...SuSE, which is my choice of
distros for non-laptops, doesn't do so well on the laptops I've tried
installing it.

Have you tried setting ENABLE_SUSECONFIG=no in your /etc/rc.config
file?  I've not done this, but it should keep all your config files
intact after using YaST.
