I was concerned that the process might be difficult when I set up about a
month ago, but it turns out that it is straightforward and easy.
Basically you just need to set up your Linux system so that its default
route goes to the gateway address supplied by your ISP.
For RedHat you typically set an interface's gateway address with the
GATEWAY= line in the appropriate /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX
file.
I put the DSL modem on its own ethernet adapter so that I could take it down
remotely without affecting the rest of my network.
If you put the DSL modem on your existing adapter (by plugging it into your
hub), then you either need to configure the adapter to have two addresses
(the current address and the ISP gateway address) or you need to switch it
over to the ISP gateway address and reconfigure your network to accomodate
that change. It is easier to give the DSL modem its own ethernet adapter.
Depending on the model of your DSL modem and what you are plugging it into,
you may or may not need to use a crossover cable. You should be able to
determine if it is connected correctly by looking at the link status lights
on your NIC or hub.
Once you think you have things set up correctly then try to ping your ISP
gateway. If that succeeds, then try to ping other internet addresses. If
you have problems use the ifconfig and route command output to diagnose
where the problem is.
