DUH - When I built the XF86 rpm, I *assumed* that something during that three hour process would install it.  I was wrong.  

After installing the rpm and fighting with Xconfigurator for half an hour, I now have X working.  I still need to tweak some settings and install the 3D drivers, but at least I can see some real progress.

Thanks to all who offered tips - you woke me up to see what should have been obvious.

Are you sure you're running their XF86Setup (`which XF86Setup`)?  It shows up
for me.  xfree86 changed at 3.3.2 so X -> Xwrapper now.  Xconfigurator ought to
work.   Does your version match the rest of your XFree86 rpm's?  Are you
starting in VGA mode (640x480) to guarantee your monitor settings will work?
Finally, what does it say when you capture startx?  (`startx
2>/tmp/startx.out`)?
