I'm not sure if this is at all helpful, but in the course of 
investigating Redhat driver update disks, I ran across

http://people.redhat.com/dledford/aic7xxx.html

which has a link to an "aic7xxx version 5.1.18 for the 2.0.36 kernel" 
which works with all 3940W and 3940UW cards not based on the 7895 
chipset. I don't know if this might help with your problem, but I thought 
I'd mention it. Hope it helps.
