Gnome session can be set to remember the desktop when you log out.
Perhaps you had Netscape up when you logged out and clicked save desktop
settings. To counter that, either close Netscape and log out of Gnome
and click Save Desktop Settings, or delete the .gnome/session file from
CLI. When you restart Gnome after deleting the session file, it'll
create a new session file and start with the Gnome File Manager and Help
Browser open. Close what you don't want open, open what you want open
and log out and save the settings on log out or go to Gnome Panel
Foot/Settings/Save Current Settings...
