If you're logging in under gdm, I believe gdm writes the magic cookie
in /var/gdm/:0.Xauth - this cookie has to be set for each user name
that logs in. You might want to erase the .Xauthority file in the
user directory, and try it. If that doesn't work you could always
create a sym link from .Xauthority in the user directory to the
/var/gdm/:0.Xauth file - you might have to change the access rights on
the /var/gdm directory which could compromise your security though.
I suspect kdm and xdm do something similar but haven't checked it
out.
