I am replying because I am a "Team Leader" for a group of kids that are
involved in the FIRST Lego competition (www.usfirst.org). This is exactly
the kind of competition you are talking about. They are indeed few an far
between around here. The kids pretty much go crazy over the deal. As far
as programming goes, I have tried to stick to the GUI frontend programming
system from ROBOLABS. I am a programmer with about 15 years experience and
I think this is an exceptional intro for kids to programming. I am
considering working with some of the kids on a compiler for the mindstorm.
We have a unique oppurtunity in that the other two teams in our area (East
Texas) dropped out and we are by ourselves out here. We have decided to
join the Dallas area teams for their competitions.
It would be really cool if other groups (NTLUG) could get involved in this.
I think the publicity would help us (NTLUG) and the extra competition would
help us (Our Robotics group). I can send someone additional info if their
exist any interest.
