[NTLUG:Discuss] XFree86 4.0.1

I got a problem: I've installed XFree86 4.0.1 and my Debian doesn't want to boot in a normal way anymore. It just starts all programs as it should do, but when it should enter X the screen turns black (monitor is still active) and I get flashes on my screen about once per five seconds. I can't quit X (I assume it's X, not sure about it), not with ctrl-alt-fx, nor with ctrl-alt-backspace. I can boot my system in single mode, that works without any problem. When I switch to normal mode (running init 3) I get the same problem.

Before this happened, I had a running XFree86 4.0, installed by hand. Everything worked fine. I decided to update to 4.0.1 when that version appeared on the mirrors of Debian. Everything installed without problems, as far as I can recall. After the installation and after a reboot the problems started.

The problem seems to be my mouse. I found some log-files and they point to a failure when starting the core-pointer. I've got a Logitech MouseMan, it worked fine with the Microsoft-protocol before.

Anyone knows how to solve this or what may be the problem? If I can't find a solution, I'll reinstall Debian, but I don't hope I have to do so.

I'm running Debian woody with kernel 2.4.0test9 and the newest libc6-version the Debian-mirrors offer (not sure which version, writing this in the Windows I have installed when something goes wrong, so can't take a look).
