I boot off an IDE drive, and I'd swear I've got a 2930B in mine, but this is
what dmesg gives:

(scsi0) <Adaptec AIC-7860 Ultra SCSI host adapter> found at PCI 0/13/0
(scsi0) Narrow Channel, SCSI ID=7, 3/255 SCBs
(scsi0) Downloading sequencer code... 422 instructions downloaded
scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.25/3.2.4
       <Adaptec AIC-7860 Ultra SCSI host adapter>
scsi : 1 host.

But I recall that both the 2930 and the 2940 use the same module anyway. Hmm,
in comparing Richard's & mine, his says "wide" while mine says "narrow", so I
must have a 2930.

I'm with Randall & Richard, you know the driver is always going to be used, so
just recompile the kernel with the AIC-7xxx driver in it (not as a module).

FWIW, I run under a SuSE distro and have never had a problem with this.
