Sometimes they match up like that, but not always.

There is a modem how-to there.
On a side note, I also have noticed that some hardware manufacturers SAY
Linux compatable, but do not seem to be actually providing the support. The
one I found was my PCMCIA lan card by etherlink. The box and documents say
"Linux Compatable" but I come to find out that only means that kernel
hackers have built support. Not them. It also currently has a rather
serious bug that if I am using the lan card when I suspend or resume, it
usually locks up the computer. (Known bug)
