[NTLUG:Discuss] dsl or cable modem w/ static IP in Richardso n?

First hand experience with AT&T (formerly TCI) @Home.
Yes, there is a security scanner looking for News Group server (NNTP
protocol). I haven't seen any scanner for FTP servers (much less any other
servers).
There is absolutely no support for Linux but this would not prevent us
NTLUG'ers from setting one up nor there is anything in the Acceptable Use
Policy (AUP) to prevent the use of Linux (or Unix).
I was given static IP initially and once the Motorola Cyberwavesurfer modem
has been replaced with 3COM cable modem, I was given a DHCP-assigned IP
addresses (two). There has been no change in my IP addresses for over a
year.
I've been up running for about 2 years and 1 month and nevertheless, I'm
still seeking DSL drop (despite being 24k' from CO) so I can run a
full-fledge servers.
In these days and ages, I would take whatever is available in my
neighborhood (DSL or Cable) because ANYTHING is better than 38Kbps analog
modem. I'm paying 48 (which includes $5 for 2nd IP) for my cable. I'm
seeing $8 for DSL drop (probably not including ISP fee) in DFW area from
SBC.
Hope you get either one!
