Wow. this wvdial utility really works!  

I haven't checked to see what exactly the problem was
but at this point in time I really don't care.  It's 
nice to be on the net on one's own box.  Ahhh.

Thanks also to lee at brave.com for his input about logging the 
modem session (and the actual logfile name!) under Windows.
I'm not sure if the information provided in that log would 
have helped, but it was a good idea.  
 
Thanks to asenec at senechalle.net at least for the tidbit 
of info which seems to imply that had I tried another
area number I might not have had this problem now
(as my own chat scripts might have worked on those
numbers).  HA!

Thanks to lists at 123india.com for telling me about a program 
which more or less solved my problem :)

Thanks to discuss at ntlug.org for existing, the makers of 
wvdial, etc etc.  Have I said enough thank-you(s)?
