The argument goes that without all that GNU stuff, Solaris and IRIX would
still be fairly complete OS's.  They have shells, compilers, and all the
little tools like ls/cp/tar/compress/ln/...

The deal with Linux is that if you SUBTRACT all the GNU stuff, you don't have
an operating system - just a kernel.

People will *STILL* call it "Linux" though.  Nothing is going to stop that.
