[NTLUG:Discuss] Re: bad nics, was AT&T@Home redux

Howdy,

Regarding the bad NICs, we had three or four Netgear FA310 and FA311 NICs
go out within a couple of weeks, and they were from both retail shelves
and from our distributor. Just wondering what brand NICs gave the
trouble, considering the fluke failures we saw.

Incidentally, we have a network we manage that involves a couple of layers
of routers, providing private IP networking in about a dozen sites in a
campus environment. We're using Linux boxes for routers, controlling
traffic over 802.11 wireless devices.

I'm extremely please with the reliability of the Linux systems, and it was
a snap to set 'em up. Because I was in a hurry and there are only about
twenty routes in the system, all the routes are static.

RIP would be nicer, although nobody would see any difference, but my
question is what NICs work best in a multi-ethernet adaptor system? We're
running consumer-grade PCI adaptors, mostly Netgear and Linksys, and
they're working fine. However, it seems that a fair number of ethernet
NICs either must be in a bus-master slot, or are just a lot happier if
they are.

While bus-mastering is probably a lot nicer for a block device like an
ethernet card, what's a good recommendation for a cheap NIC that doesn't
need mastering?

TIA!

Carl
