Richard,

Rerun your steps after "make menuconfig" and insert a "make clean"
before the "make dep" (IIRC).  This might not do the trick but it's
worth a try.  You might have to go all the way back to an inital "make
mrproper" before the "make menuconfig" to clear the entire build tree.
