I have a Tablet (or Pen top, or web pad) computer (486DX 50mhz 8meg
ram) That I'd like to load linux onto. Fitting an X window into a 8 meg
system is unlikely, so It looks like I'm stuck with windows on this toy.
I could raise the memory to 24meg, but the battery life drops too much
(from ~6hrs to 1.5hr). It currently has a 340meg hard drive (could be
any size, but this one is designed for low power consumption). I
currently have the extra 16m chip and an 810meg drive for this thing for
the linux load attempt, but haven't found the time to play with it, or a
working pattern rec system that's linux based, or a linux system that is
fairly current and would fit into the 8 meg restriction.
Also, I have several laptops (486DX 75mhz 20meg ram, 540meg drive, 1
pcmcia slot) that I want to try linux on. These guys are currently
internet terminals I've loaned to relatives. Since I put 'free'
internet on them, I loaded win95 to keep Bluelight, the ISP, happy.
However, since the days of 'no cost' internet seem to be over, so I'm
looking for a better load to put on these systems (IE 5.0 is too crash
happy on a 486, at least with an Ad banner contending for memory.)
Since none of the relatives in question have any technical background,
keeping the appearance similar to what they have now (win95 + IE) is
important. That said, I'd like to cut down the number of reloads
required because of mysterious disappearing programs/drivers, or the
inevitable 'i thought if i did this, i'd be able to play music on it'
failures.
