My little Agenda PDA manages it.

The Agenda has only 8Mb RAM and runs a pretty complete version of Linux
*AND* Xfree.  It's CPU runs at 66MHz - but it doesn't have floating point
math - so your 486 might be reasonably comparable in performance too.

Since your machine has a hard drive to use for swap-space, you are MUCH
better off than the Agenda!
