[NTLUG:Discuss] ipop3d vs. Microsoft

Howdy!

I've observed this on Linux based ipop3d, but it may happen on other
platforms as well. I think it's a Microsoft problem - never seen it with
fetchmail! - but I sure would like to know if there is anything I can do
to accomodate, um, consumer-grade mail clients.

Microsoft mail clients - the old Internet Mail, Outlook Express, and
Outlook - all seem to occasionally hang, sometimes with a message that
says 'your pop3 server has stopped responding'. Exiting will often leave
the lock file in place.

I once found an entry in Microsoft's Knowledge Base that said Sun systems
would trigger this, and that in some cases Microsoft Outlook would stop
acknowledging anything to the pop3 server, and then complain the pop3
server had stopped responding.

The MS article also said the problem was statistically possible on any
message whose body plus header exceeded 12K - a rather small message.

Any ideas? Suggestions on how to fine-tune ipop3d to work with toy email
clients greatly appreciated! :-)

Best regards,

Carl
