Everything works except the sound

I have tried ES1371, VIA82Cxxx_audio
individually and together
I tried ALSA

I cannot get the drivers to load
they complain about missing references, I think
(I am not at the system now)

I could get ES1371 to load but it was silent and hung the console I
typed play in
VIA82cxxx_audio will not load and gives numerous errors


what pointers can you offer?
what other info shall I provide?
