[NTLUG:Discuss] Strainge Request, Maybe?

perhaps you could point out the win2k bug that allows anyone on the web
to own a win2k box in a matter of seconds. It came on the scene last
week.

Win2k is not a bad choice behind a firewall. It is not appropriate in
front of a firewall for at least two more years. The issue is the fact
that you don't have over 10,000 eyes looking at the code uncovering
security issues -- and getting them fixed the same day -- with Win2k. You
can guarantee that there are other system owning exploits of Windows,
which may or may not be fixed as Microsoft wills it. Linux bugs get fixed
quickly -- often within hours.

The price for Win2k goes up about $100 for each user for various
licenses -- file server, Database server, yearly software rental. This
can make a 100 user software shop cost the company $10,000 a year (or
more) in recurring expenses, whether or not the software has problems.

The recurring expenses for Linux are $0 for software licenses.

Every month, more Apache web servers are being put on the net than exist
in total Win2k installed user base. The question to ask it why? The
answer is three fold: 1) Reliability, 2) Security, 3) Cost.

If they want to drain their bottom line, let them know they can go
ahead, but it will affect the profitability of the company.
