Well, the whole point of GCC 2.96/2.97 being such a bad choice
is that it's incompatible both up and down with 2.95.xx (which
the other non-RedHat distro's are using) and 3.00 (which I believe
was just released a day or so ago).

Hence you need not just a new compiler but all new standard libraries
too.  Since you probably don't want to have to recompile every line
of code in the machine, you'd need to keep both the old libs and the
new ones in parallel.

It should be do-able - but it's not going to be a simple process
I suspect.

No - it certainly isn't.

Yes.  Hopefully GCC 3.0 will bring back peace and harmony when the
next releases of each of the distro's appear.
