Yahoo Turns from Netscape/Java!!
This appears on todays Yahoo news site.
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/cn/20010914/tc/yahoo_turns_from_sun-netscape_technology_1.html
I've used Yahoo almost exlusively for my 'free'
services in the last 2 years because they've supported
open platforms over microsoft technologies. That is:
Their games are java based
Their IM client runs on just about every platform
They Sync to palm/WAP phone (and not CE)
This is a very very bad sign for open source.. please
take a few minutes to click on the link above and find
the 'comments' section and slam the hell out of yahoo
for posting this intention to move their services to
microsoft based ActiveX technologies, beg them to
continue providing java as primary etc.... I'm sure
they posted this On their front page to look for
negative feedback before they actually start
dismantling their java systems.
Yahoo has quietly been the number one open source site
(even if they haven't released the code for their IM's
etc...) If yahoo starts requiring IE... that will
greatly reduce what you can do with netscape or any
open source java enabled browser that doesnt run
winmedia and active X.
