All seems well now. What I did to get the display back was:
Changed the '/etc/inittab' from 'id:5:initdefault' to 'id:3:initdefault'.
This gave me a Linux prompt at my next boot.
>From the Linux prompt I ran 'Xconfigurator' as root.
At the next boot 'startx' started gnome.
