Debian 2.2.16

I finally got pppd to dial and get a connection to my isp
after tracking down missing modules. Now problems.

ifconfig indicates that ppp got the inet address and gateway correct,
however:
1. The routing table shows the gateway address as the interface address
and the default gateway unchanged. This doesn't look good and can't
      get to internet.

 2. Enough info is passed to ip-up that I could write the ip route add commands
but I've no idea where the routing table entry is coming from which pppd
is apparently creating therefore how to suppress or correct it. Is
there
another script other than ip-up I don't know about?

  3. When I dial in to an ISP with a windoze machine, its DNS server 'table' is
automatically updated, therefore DNS info must be passed as connection
time,
         I think??
But my Linux ppp is not updating resolv.conf.
No DNS info is passed to ip-up, so I can't script that myself.
It seems that I am vaguely aware of a ppp script updating resolv.conf
               but I can't recall.

Any help appreciated. Thanx.
