I also registered at register.com and here's how I did it:
I registered the name mudpoet.org
When it asked for my Primary and Secondary DNS servers, I put in:
    Pri: ns.mudpoet.org
    Sec: ns.blup.org (a friend's DNS server, but it doesn't matter much -- he
                      doesn't even have to configure his in any way)
Then I set up the named dns server on my computer at home:  This required creating all of 3 files (none of which are more than 14 lines long) plus downloading one other off the net that doesn't require altering.  They are short and pretty simple to figure out. I'm more than happy to send you these files if you'd like to take a look -- just email me off-list.
