For those looking for a decent registrar, you might want to check out
www.gandi.net. They charge 12 euros a year (about $10, more or less), allow
registration up to ten years, and have a nice web frontend to handle all your
administration needs (changing DNS servers, specifying them as secondary, etc.).
They had my DNS record loaded on their DNS server less than a few hours after
registering.

Also, OpenNIC (www.opennic.unrated.net) is a democratic root server alternative to
the ICANN monopoly. You can create a charter for your own top level domain (TLD),
and once approved by the membership at large, hosted on OpenNIC servers, or you can
get your own domain name (free, of course) from one of the many TLDs hosted by
OpenNIC.
Membership to OpenNIC is free, and you will be supporting a good cause in the
process. All OpenNIC servers resolve ICANN domains as well as OpenNIC domains and
some other alternative roots. We have servers run by volunteers all over the
world. I run and maintain one locally (144.162.120.230) that, of course, is
available for anyone to use.
